Tuesday 9th September
After breakfast and
showers we got the bikes down and went for a ride to the local village. Very
agricultural area, this. Lots of small scale farmers with their own fields
producing cabbage, onion, lettuce, garlic etc.
Rode down a long cobbled road –
fun on the bikes – to get to the village. It was more of a small town really,
had a big church.
We rode around for
a while, went to the church. Found the beach and watched some men with long
poles searching for something amongst the rocks. They didn’t seem to find
anything. Further along the beach there was lots of seaweed spread out, then
bundled up into heaps with plastic over it. We concluded that they must use it
as fertiliser for the fields.
They sky was
looking grey, so we went back to the camp, had lunch, and then went to the
beach. There was a mist rolling in off the sea. Looked like a scene from ‘The
Fog’. It was still warm though, and the sun kept trying to break through, so we
spent a couple of hours there. I listened to a Raymond Chandler story on my
phone.
The mist was
getting worse, so we retired back to the van and rescued the washing. K hung it
all up inside the van to finish airing. We could see the mist rolling across
the camp.
My ear was no
better so I decided to try the ‘warm olive oil’ treatment. Didn't have a
noticeably beneficial effect, perhaps I need to do it more than once.
I filled the van
with water again, by which time the sun was out a bit, so we sat outside and
read for a while. Then I packed up the van, got the awning in and put the mat
and chairs away, and rain was forecast. I didn’t have to really cook that
evening – we had the chicken thing that I had prepared the evening before. We
used the wifi again. We worked out where we were heading for next – a choice of
three camps around Porto . The one below sounds
the closest – it’s another ‘Orbitur’ one – a lot of them are it seems. It’s
only about an hour away, even without using the toll motorway.
