Continuing our tour through the picturesque Catlins area we visited McLean Falls - which were spectacular. You got to them by walking through some lovely natural New Zealand forest - full of native trees and ferns. It was very atmospheric, with the dappled light falling on the path.
Having read about Curio Bay and it's petrified stone forest, we headed there. The tide was out and so it was easy to see the remains of the stone trees on the wave platform. They really did look just like trees that had been broken off at the base. You could even count the rings in some cases.
As we left we spotted some very rare Yellow Eyed penguin chicks partially hidden in the bush at the edge of the beach. You could see tbem fairly easily by eye - but the camera couldn't differentiate movement. We thought it best to leave them quietly alone, wating for their parents return with food later in the day.
Whilst in this area we also saw more seabirds of various types, and some Hector's Dolphins quite clearly in the bay. It was a very interesting day.
We left fairly late in the afternoon and drove to Invercargill.
