The next morning we set off towards the glaciers on the west coast. It took us a long time because we kept stopping to look at goodies along the way :)
We saw waterfalls and mountain rivers, native bush and deep blue pools - all very lovely. We took so long that we decided that we would spend the night at Haast - a town on the way. I chose 'Haast Beach Holiday Park' because I thought that being near a beach would be nice. We drove 15 ks in the wrong direction to get there. Another quite 1960's style camp. I spoke to the lady at reception enquiring after the beach. "It's a 15 minute walk away" she said, and pointed to a rough map on the wall showing the walk to be out of the camp, along the road, across a bridge, over a stile, across a field, over a stile, along an estuary for a bit then the beach.
We parked up and had an hour or so of daylight, so I thought I'd give it a go. Long story short - I got as far as the edge of the estuary before being beaten by massive driftwood, thick gorse bushes and, above all, sand flies!!! I was being eaten alive. I got back to camp to find that K had also succumbed to this Dracula of the South and was sitting completely covered over.
We spent most of the evening in the kitchen/dining area of the site, which was ok.
Next morning we counted our bites, which were many, rubbed on the germolene, and left for the glaciers.
