We stopped to have a look at Maori wall art - but all the good bits seem to have been nicked by Europeans to place in museums - so we weren't too impressed.
On to Oamuru which has a lot of buildings made from the local limestone - impressive Victorian edifices. One old grainstore has been turned into NZ's Steampunk Headquarters. We had to go in. It was strange on the inside, and still a work in progress. They hold a Steampunk festival in the town each year.
The town also has a Victorian Street - which consists of old grain and wool storage buildings repurposed to hpld shops, galleries and cafés etc. The local 'Old Time' radio station also housed an antique radio collection in their building, which was really interesting.
We had lunch at an excellent Steampunk themed cafe on the harbourside. We looked at the closest camp site but decided to move closer to the Moeraki Boulders, which we hoped to visit the following day. The weather was changing, with rain promised.
