The Catlins

After spending most of the day at the  Albatross Centre we drove back into Dunedin and found a small campsite to stay at - the Leith Valley Holiday Park. The weather was quite damp and overcast.  We went for a little walk before eating, and retired to bed after a quiet evening.  We were heading south in the morning.

Getting away quite early, we took the scenic route. At Nugget Point we saw lots of seabirds and seals. We tried to see penguins from the hide in Rparing Bay, but it was the wrong time of day.

Heading for Invercargill but going the scenic way through The Catlins. We stopped overnight at a DOC campsite at Papatowai. Basic site but the area was great with a fantastic estuary bordered by Rata trees - some of which are a thousand years old.  You could walk the estuary to the blue, wave crashing sea. Lovely. Not too many sand flies either. There were fossils in the bog rocks on the beach. That was a week ago on Sunday 8th March.
